Staying in Balance:
Managing Stress in an Uncertain Economy
Mental Health Association of New York City
has launched Staying in
Balance, a resource toolkit to help social service
organizations respond in healthy ways to the high levels of
emotional distress created by the economic recession. Staying
in Balance is funded by the New York Community Trust and developed
by MHA-NYC with input from safety net organizations
throughout New York City.
Staying in Balance offers a toolkit, training, and materials to help organizations promote
emotional wellness and organizational health during the economic
crisis.
Inside the Staying in Balance Toolkit:
• Tools to help managers engage in organizational level
interventions to reduce worker stress.
• Materials and guidance to help staff members and clients
learn strategies to reduce stress.
• Education to help human service organizations recognize
the difference between normal responses to stress and responses
that require professional help.
• Skills to help staff members defuse hostile client
situations.
• Information about 1-800-LIFENET - NYC's 24/7 crisis,
information and referral hotline - to help staff and clients access
mental health resources when needed.
• Strategies to promote resource sharing and community
building in the human service sector.
Staying in Balance Materials:
• Tip sheets to assist clients with stress reduction;
• Tip sheets to assist supervisors in reducing workplace
stress;
• Tip sheets to assist parents with talking to their children
about the economy;
• Posters with customer care messaging;
• Posters with stress reduction tips for employees and
volunteers;
• A booklet designed to help clients navigate the social
